Return to school

15th May 2020

Dear Parents/ Carers,

We have now had a chance to process the Department for Educations guidance regarding reopening schools.   Before we open our gates we need to ensure the safety of our children and staff.  At this stage, it looks like the best course of action will be to start slowly (part-time) with Year 6 for half days then a full day the following week.  We will decide from there which classes will be next to return once we have undertaken a full risk assessment for the other classes.  We will continue to provide childcare for key workers, children with EHC plans and any of our vulnerable children and this will move from the provision at Queens Park to St Peter’s Primary School when we reopen on the 2nd of June.

Attached is a brief outline of some of the safety procedures we will be following.  Additionally, a more detailed risk assessment will be available on the website in the next week once I have consulted with staff and the school Governors.

The school day will look very different to what we have been used to, as will pick up and drop offs, so please be patient with us as we deal with the enormous complexity of reopening the school.  We will also not be diving straight back into the curriculum, rather we will be taking things very slowly and spending quite a bit of time on looking after children’s wellbeing, giving them time to talk and share their feelings and also providing plenty of opportunities for physical fitness.  Whatever is happening in the classes at school will also mirror the home learning activities that you have been used to.

The guidance state that it is not compulsory to send your child / children into school at this time.  This is a decision that only you as a family can make according to what you believe is appropriate.  We will support whatever decision you make.

You will receive a brief questionnaire to complete, to provide information about your family and whether you would consider sending your child back to school.  We need to know this important information to know how many children we might expect to return so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

Please could you fill in the short questionnaire no later than Tuesday 19th  May irrespective of whether you are sending your child back to school as we will need this information to make a professional judgement about which class we will invite back into school next and help us with future preparations.

We are very much looking forward to seeing the children again, however I am sure you can appreciate that our first duty of care is to make sure that our children, families and staff are safe. You know your children best and what their needs are, so trust your judgement of whether you think they need to come back to school or not and remember we will support your decision wholeheartedly.

Best wishes
